"To view garden ornaments as
baubles, to add them as afterthoughts, is to miss the chance to
elevate
an outdoor space
from merely pleasant to
truly artful."

Looking for a Home and Some TLC:
We've just completed the daunting task of taking a physical inventory of every item in our gardens, warehouse and showrooms. As is to be expected, there are always a few items we discover that may have suffered a little mishap or need a little bit of TLC to bring them back to their former glory. These items provide a great opportunity for bargain hunters or those of you with a creative flair. We make shopping easy by relocating these pieces to a specially designated outdoor sale area or to our indoor flea market, Bon Marche, so you can browse in warm comfort during the colder months and enjoy a cup of coffee, cocoa or tea!

Green Looks Great on Yew:
...And on hollies and boxwoods and junipers, too! Evergreens in containers look beautiful, but it's so easy to forget to keep these watered during the winter months and it doesn't take long for them to suffer the consequences of freezing, thawing and drying winds and little water. There's nothing inviting about a brown, dying shrub languishing by the front door! We have a wonderful carefree solution for adding greenery to your winter landscape—beautifully crafted artificial specimens with a convincingly natural look! They can withstand the elements with no problem. We have a great selection of true-to-life species including Japanese holly, English boxwoods, junipers and yews and can special order sizes up to 72 inches for large areas. These are a great way to add style and color to your entryway--imagine a pair of elegant boxwoods in matched urns flanking your entryway. Let your imagination run wild--since you don't have to brave the elements and trudge out to water them, why not put a beautiful "evergreen" accent by your poolhouse or potting shed to soften the view during the winter months! This is a great way to spruce up the landscape (no pun intended) before the first holiday guests arrive!

Time to Winterize!
Don't forget to take some time to protect your valuable investments from the effects of freezing and thawing. If you have a frostproof container that you're keeping filled with planting medium all winter, don't forget to raise it up to allow for proper drainage and to prevent it from freezing to the ground. Moisture from the earth or paving surfaces can wick into the bottom of a container and the expansion and contraction of the freeze/thaw cycle can damage your pot. In addition, trapped moisure can stain your paving or rot your deck and provides a cozy haven for overwintering insects. An easy, inexpensive and unobtrusive solution is to use one of our Down Under Plant Stands. These can be quickly customized to fit any size pot and can support up to 500 lbs. We have these available in black, clear or terra cotta to blend invisibly under any size pot or planter. For more tips on proper winterization of your garden, click here .

Looking Ahead:
As the year-end draws nearer, we've started to compile our wish lists for additions to Spring inventory. For those of you like-minded individuals who are already planning next year's garden, we'd be happy to help. Oftentimes we can incorporate your list into our inventory order to help defray shipping costs and ensure color matches which is important if you're purchasing multiples of one item. Spring may seem a long way off in the distance but it's only a mere four months away! Please feel free to give us a call if you'd like to meet with one of our staff to place an order for Spring 2011.

November comes And November goes,
With the last red berries And the first white snows.
With night coming early, And dawn coming late,
And ice in the bucket And frost by the gate.
The fires burn And the kettles sing,
And earth sinks to rest Until next spring.
~Clyde Watson
