An exquisite pair of antique carved stone Chinese Foo dogs sold as a pair. This protective pair sat perched in the Schumacher garden for many years imparting their noble presence and historical significance to the spectacular horticulture abundant in this important garden. The word “foo” or “fu” derives from the words for “prosperity” or “Buddha”. In China, the proper word for this figure is shishi which exactly translates to “stone lion”. Foo Dog is a western term describing the lion figures of pre-modern China. Traditionally, they stood at the entrance of imperial palaces, tombs, governmental offices, temples as well of the homes of wealthy citizens as early as the period of the Han Dynasty. These carved stone treasures have aged to perfection while residents of the Schumacher Garden. Material is Granite.
