Product Description

From The Schumacher Garden Collection, a delicately created, rare and important bronze garden sculpture with dark bronze patina, the piece is inscribed “Roman Bronze Works Inc. Rachel M. Hawks was an American sculptor born in Maryland in 1879 who passed away in 1964 at the age of 85. For most of her life, she resided in Baltimore with her husband, Arthur Hawks, who was the city editor of the Baltimore News. She studied at the Maryland Institute in Baltimore and at the Rinehart School of Sculpture under the direction of Ephraim Keyser and Charles Pike and was in the very first graduating class in 1898 with sculptors, Edward Berge and other well known artists. Many of her important works in bronze included garden sculptures often representing children and the carefree innocence and harmony with nature. The Baltimore Sun quoted that she was “by nature a Peter Pan – All her career as a sculptor was spent in creating little parcels of Never-Never Land for those who believe that the perpetual wonderment of youth may be found in a garden.”
