Tudi Gong – God of the Earth
The God of Earth, called “Tu-di-gong” in Chinese, is popularly worshipped in Taiwan. Fu-de-zheng-shen is a formal name translating to the god of good fortune and virtue. Closely tied to nature, agriculture and the land, this figure plays an important role in Taiwanese culture, thought to bestow harmony and good luck. Temples of worship for this god are found in many situs in Taiwan which includes the field or under a tree, in bustling cities or in quiet villages. People might pray in shrines or sometimes in cemeteries where they believe a blessing will come to them and their ancestors. You will almost always find a smile and friendly face on this benevolent communal god.
